Frctorgaphic study showed that the wheel hub has failed by static overload. There were no evidences of progressive failure. Microstructural study conducted on the wheel hub material showed inhomogeneous microstructure with deleterious phases such as Fe-Mn-Cu-Al-Si precipitates segregated/clustered in script-like morphology. This microstructural abnormality was found to be predominant in the primary fracture zone. The unsatisfactory hot working of the cast ingot is believed to have resulted in such microstructure. Analysis suggests that the inferior microstructure in the hub material was the most probable reason for the failure. A detailed analysis of the findings and the failure is presented in this report.
