Abstract

A cracked frame separation device of an aircraft was sent to this laboratory for investigation. The frame, made of an aluminium alloy, had developed cracks in the web of the longitudinal sides. Examination revealed that the cracks were through thickness and they propagated in a direction parallel to the frame faces. Study showed that the cracks were resulted due to exfoliation corrosion, a common failure mechanism in rolled or forged aluminium alloy products in marine atmosphere. A detailed analysis of the failure and the probable reasons for the failure are presented in this report.
