Abstract

Damaged 1st stage compressor rotor blades of an aircraft were analyzed. Signatures on the leading edge close to the tip of the blades suggest that the damages occurred as a result of impact with a soft, solid mass. Compositional analysis of deposit available in the damaged region of the blade indicates presence of organic matter such as the residue of a bird. There were no evidences of damage due to impact with metallic material or hard objects such as pebbles/stones.
