Abstract

A broken pin assembly of an aircraft was forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that the pin has fractured at the fillet of the conical to the smaller cylindrical section. Although the fracture surface was obliterated due to post fracture rubbing and corrosion, gross fractographic features indicated evidences of fatigue failure. The fatigue crack was found to have initiated at a groove-like stress concentrator which was created during machining of the pin. The specification of the material of construction of the pin was not provided. However, study does not suggest failure of the pin because of any metallurgical abnormalities.
