Abstract

Fractographic study showed that the TGB control lever has failed by fatigue. Examination revealed that two fatigue cracks had originated at the fillet of the ribs of the ‘I’-section of the shorter arm of the lever under bending load. After initiation, the fatigue cracks have propagated progressively over about 90% of the cross section before giving way to final overload fracture. No mechanical and/or metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the premature fatigue crack initiation. The material of construction was found to conform to the specification. Failure pattern suggests that the most probable reason for the fatigue crack initiation could be assembly stresses. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
