Abstract

A centre perspex panel of a helicopter was forwarded to this laboratory for investigation. The panel was found to have developed cracks/fracture adjacent to the fastening- hole regions. Examination revealed that there was deviation in the panel fixing wherein the holes were drilled in the prespex sheet instead of semi-circular cutouts as recommended in the design. Because of this, the material had experienced excessive bending stresses around the holes leading to generation of cracks or fracture. With regard to quality of material, a detailed study was carried out in the recent past and a report was submitted (refer NAL Report No. MT-FA-1158-06-2009). The findings reported in this report are applicable to the present panel as well.
