Abstract

Failed tube samples taken from 1524 Loop Cooler Condenser of synthesis plant at SPIC, Tuticorin were sent to the laboratory for investigation. Samples from unfailed tubes were also provided for comparative study. Examination revealed two basic mechanisms, viz., hydrogen embrittlement and fatigue as the cause of fracture/cracking of the tubes. However, with the available data, it was not possible to establish which mechanism took precedence over the other.
