Abstract

Two fractured bolts belonging to 1.2 m tunnel model cart were forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that both the bolts have failed by reverse bending fatigue. In one of the bolts, the fatigue crack had initiated at the root of the threads while in the other, it was found to have initiated at the fillet of the head to shank. The failure in the threaded region of the first bolt by fatigue appears to be natural due to usage over a long period of time. However, the failure at the fillet of the head to shank in the second bolt is unusual. This bolt was found to have been machined from an existing bolt resulting in reduction in the diameter. It is believed that the reduction in load carrying capacity due to reduction in diameter was responsible for the fatigue failure in this bolt.
