Abstract

A sample containing a crack which was excavated from the steam drum of boiler of captive power plant was sent to this laboratory for investigation. Examination revealed that in the vicinity of the crack, there was wide variation in the microstructure of the material. Study confirmed that the variation in microstructure resulted due to either presence of hot spot or repair welding on the internal surface of the steam drum. Analysis indicates that the crack observed was a cold crack and it was associated with the hot spot/repair welding. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report and a few recommendations suggested.
