A portion of the cracked D-19 root rib plate of an aircraft was sent to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that the cracking of the fin root rib was due to exfoliation corrosion. This is a special form of corrosion in which the intergranular corrosion proceeds selectively along the grain boundaries of rolled or forged Al-alloy products.
