A starboard outrigger strut assembly of an aircraft that cracked during taxiing was sent to the laboratory to analyze the cause of failure. Investigation revealed that the tube of the leg sub-assembly had failed by fatigue. The fatigue was of low cycle – high stress type. Misalignment of the sliding tube sub-assembly appears to be the most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation.
