Abstract

Three inner shafts PTO and one Gear PTO having surface damages were removed from aircraft gearboxes and sent to the laboratory for analysis. All the 4 components were found to have surface defects in the plain diameter region. These defects were found to be pitting and surface oxidation. The extent of corrosion was found varying in different shafts. Observations also suggest that there was relative movement between the shaft and the gear. This has resulted in loss of material at the region of contact by abrasive wear after corrosion has set in.
