Abstract

The design, development and testing of suitable active magnetic bearings (both radial and thrust) for the existing 50 m3/h sodium pump presently in use in the 500 kW loop at IGCAR have been discussed in the present document. The scope of the present work is to replace the angular contact bearing of teh existing pump by an active magnetic thrust bearing and an active magnetic radial bearing. In order to do this, the existing pump shaft and some other components need to be modified. The existing pump components and required modifications along with the design of the active magnetic bearings are discussed in detailed in this document.
