Abstract

This work presents use of an implicit RANS solver, viz., IMPRANS developed at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) for prediction of post stall behaviour of wind turbine airfoils. The result of Imprans are compared with those of viterna-corrizan (VC) correlation for extanded range of angles of attack. The result suggest that VC must be used judiciously together with CFD. In particular, use of VC is not suitable for small negative angles. A proper combination of VC and CFD (in the present case IMPRANS) yield consistent results. Bladed is employed to make an assessment of power output of 500 kW wind turbine custom designed for low speed conditions. The power curves based on various combination of CFD and VC and in-built correlation of bladed produce consistent results.
