    Abstract

    The aim of the present work is the development of a code for two-dimensional aerodynamic optimisation using the gradient-based approach. Two dierent approaches13; are used in the present work, rst the discrete adjoint approach and second the discrete direct approach based on complex Taylor's series expansion(CTSE). The main aim of the work is to deve lop the code using discrete adjoint method. The CTSE method is used to numerically compute the residual Jacobian required for the adjoint method. The CTSE13; discrete direct approach was also developed as most of the code required was same as that in the adjoint formulation. In the present work only inviscid analysis is considered and the governing ow equations are the Euler equations. The Euler equations are solved using the implicit matrix-free LU-SSOR method. The convective terms are discretized13; using the van-Leer ux vector splitting approach. The discrete adjoint equations are developed based on this discretization. The adjoint equations are solved using the scalar diagonal LU-SSOR method after introducing a pseudo time term. The results presented here are limited to testing of the developed two-dimensional code for inverse design of a transonic nozzle.
