Abstract
Unsteady or periodic flow around a bluff (non-streamlined) body is a very important problem of engineering interest. The well-known phenomenon of periodic vortex-shedding in the wake of a cylinder plays an important role in the design of structures of cylindrical shape exposed to aero- or hydrodynamic loading eg., tall towers, offshore structures etc.. In order to understand and account for the phenomenon of fluid-structure interaction, the first important task to analyse is the time-dependent tlow around the structure. The present work frst attempts to understand the role of unsteady or time dependent terms and their discretisation in the numerical analysis of a simple two-dimensional heat conduction problem. Attention is then focussed to CFD analysis of the periodic laminar flow around a square cylinder at low Reynolds number using an existing Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) code developed in the CTFD Division, NAL after appropriate modification for unsteady terms.
