Abstract
High pressure self combustion synthesis and sintering (HPCS) of Sic from elemental Si and C conducted first by Yamada et d6 has been re-investigated.The molar ratios of Si and C were 1:1, 1:1.05, and 1:l.l. The high pressure-high temperature experiments were performed in a cubic anvil apparatus at 1.7 and 3 GPa and N 2270 K. The sintered compacts were characterized by electrical resisitvity, x-ray, microhardness, optical and scanning electron microscopic studies. The x-ray diffractogram of the samples indicated the formation of well crystalline @-Sic. An attempt'has been made to understand the mechanism of the formation of p-Sic under high pressure and high temperature.
