A scheme for obtaining an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation for an infinitely strong shock has been formulated, in terms of inner and outer limits in velocity space as Mach number tends to infinity. Using a complete expansion for the outer solution, an infinite set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations is obtained. A solution of the first seven equations of this set yields a shock thickness of 6.7 hot-side mean free paths, nearly 20 per cent higher than the value quoted by Sakurai for a hard sphere gas.
