Abstract

A number of failures in the main wheel hubs of a specific aircraft were analyzed. Metallography and fractographic studies revealed that there were either corrosion pits or stress corrosion cracks at the outer rim flange of the component. These stress raisers resulted in fatigue crack initiation and failure of the component. Remedial measures were suggested to eliminate stress raisers by suitable dressing and restoration of the protective film to avoid fatigue failures.
