Sujata, M and Madan, M and Parameswara, MA and Venkataswamy, MA and Bhaumik, SK (2005) Failure analysis of main wheel hubs of an aircraft. In: 59th Annual Technical Meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals, 15-16 Nov 2005, Chennai, India.Full text not available from this repository.
A number of failures in the main wheel hubs of a specific aircraft were analyzed. Metallography and fractographic studies revealed that there were either corrosion pits or stress corrosion cracks at the outer rim flange of the component. These stress raisers resulted in fatigue crack initiation and failure of the component. Remedial measures were suggested to eliminate stress raisers by suitable dressing and restoration of the protective film to avoid fatigue failures.
