Abstract

The scattering of neutrons by crystals, when the crystal has an atom in the unit cell that scatters neutrons anomalously was studied. Multiple phonon processes are observable in neutron scattering and no expression seems to be available for the intensities of the peaks in the second order and third order scattering. In this note the differential scattering cross- section was derived for the third order terms. It was shown that anomalous scattering provides an important method of evaluating the amplitudes of the lattice waves in crystals .
