A comprehensive review of rapid solidification of titanium alloys has been attempted in this paper. Applicable techniques used for achieving high cooling rates are described. The effect of rapid solidification on a range of titanium alloys of interest for this purpose is considered. The influence of cooling rate in obtaining a wide spectrum of microstructures including crystalline, quasicrystalline and amorphous phases is illustrated. Improvements in mechanical properties attributable to rapid solidification are indicated, where they have been determined.
