Abstract

A flow visualization technique to observe the flow around bluff body flame holders has been successfully developed. A non dimensional residence time parameter has been proposed. The importance of this parameter in predicting the blow-off characteristics of V-gutter flame holders has been demonstrated. The aerodynamic to geometric blockage and recirculation zone length to flame holder size ratios have been found to be substantially independent of inlet Mach numbers in the range of 0.15 to 0.33. However, the former ratio was found to decrease with increase in geometric blockage beyond 25%.
