The strain energy density fracture criterion is applied to characterize the onset of crack growth in laminated composite panels. Parabolic isoparametric singular and regular finite elements are used to calculate the crack-tip stress intensity factors and hence the strain energy density factors. Numerical results showing the influence of material orthotropy on the crack-tip stress intensity factors in finite geometric configurations are presented. Preliminary experimental observations which lend support to the theoretical predictions are also presented.
