    Abstract

    Crack growth rate relation derived using different models13; of crack growth process are reviewed. The concept of energy13; balance and the phenomenon of crack closure are unified to derive a relation for fatigue crack growth rate which in a physically consistent manner accounts for the effects of a number of parameters such as for example, fracture toughness, stress ratio, threshold, non-LEFM conditions etc. The phenomenon of 'pop-in' crack extension during fatigue crack growth under high stress ratio constant amplitude loading is explained on the basis of crack growth rate relation. It is shown that the structure of energy balance equation permits consideration of environmental effects.
