Abstract
The beginning of Ramp;D activities in the area of fatigue13; and fracture at the National Aeronautical Laboratory dates13; back to late sixties. From the very beginning the activities have progressed in two general directions namely, (i) Fatigue life evaluation programmes on military aircraft and development of fatigue testing facilities and techniques (ii) Analytical and experimental studies in fatigue crack growth and fracture mechanics. Research and development work carried out at the National Aeronautical Laboratory in fatigue and fracture13; mechanics is briefly described.
