Abstract
Though 'locking' and other related difficulties in the13; Finite Element formulation of constrained media elasticity are successfully overcome using assumed strain methods, consistent fields for constrained strain functions etc., stress oscillations can continue to exist if the elastic media has varying 'sectional rigidities'. In this paper, variationally consistent field- redistributed stress functions, that are orthogonal to the field-redistributed strain functions, are introduced to remove this difficulty. A quadratic, isoparametric, shear-flexible,13; tapered beam element with field-consistent strain functions is considered for the analysis.
