Abstract
Anisotropic mesophase formation in coal tar and petroleum pitch as a result of thermal polymerisation were studied using optical polarized light microscopy. Mesophase in the coal tar was formed when heated to above 420xB0;C. Removal of low molecular. weight hydrocarbons of the order of 24.wt%13; and above was found to be essential for the formation of 13; mesophase. Initial removal of about 20 wt% low molecular13; weight .hydrocarbons at 390xB0;C and then heating to 420xB0;C and13; above resulted in quot;larger clusters of mesophase. How ever,13; heating to 420xB0;C and abovedirectly gave fine dispersions13; of the mesophase. Free carbon, added anisotropic graphite13; particles and any other inclusions can be seperately identified from using optical polarized light microscopy.
