Abstract
Results are presented of phase change experiments performed13; with mercury contained in a closed quartz chamber. The use of the special chamber permitted better control on contamination and also the possibility of running at higher temperatures. The present results emphatically confirm the large temperature jumps at the interfaces reported earlier in Part 2 cf this study. Mild13; partially inverted and mild globally inverted temperature13; profiles were also observed. We do not, however, claim that13; these confirm the theoretical predictions since these mild13; inversions could possibly 3150 be due to non-uniform heating and cooling of the apparatus, three dimensional effects etc. For a conclusive ccnfirmation of the existence c crature inversion the problem of contamination of the liquid and vapour remains a major hurdle.
