Abstract
Detailed observations are reported for the effects of relative humidity (RH) of the ambient atmosphere on moisture uptake by Kevlar 49 fibers. The structural misalignment of polymer chains about the fiber axis when Kevlar fibers are exposed to thermal environments can be combined with the present moisture-uptake data to show than, upon elevated-temperature structural modification, Kevlar moisture content is enhanced in high RH environments.
