Abstract
The problem of normal impingement of a laminar plane jet' on a plate has been studied by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. The study was undertaken t o make a ' comparative study between the plane and axisymmetric13; jet impingements. The computer program available for axisymmetric case was.extended for the present case. Computations have been done keeping the jet.exit plane above the target plate at a distance of two chancrielwidths and for several values of Reynolds number (Re). The presence of a pair of line eddies on either side of the jet exit at low Re was similar t o the presence of a toroidal eddy in the case of an axisymmetric jet impingement. Quantitative differences were observed between the present results and those for an axisymmetric13; case even though there were qualitative similarities in the two cases.
