Abstract
A scheme for obtaining an exact solution of the Boltzmann13; equation for an infinitely strong shock has been formulated, in terms of inner and outer limits in velocity space as Mach number tends to infinity. Using a complete expansion for the outer solution, an infinite set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations is obtained. A solution of the first seven equations of this set yields a shock thickness of 6.7 hot-side mean free paths, nearly 20 per cent higher than the value quoted by Sakurai for a hard sphere gas.
