    Abstract

    The Ludwieg tube has been, an attractive proposition13; for the generation of short duration flows at high Reynolds13; numbers. This paper describes certain experiments carried out to understand the flow phenomenon in a Ludwieg tube.Experiments were conducted to study the flow created13; by an expansion wave in the charge tube of the Ludwieg13; tube. The pressure'drops across the expansion wave and13; the steady flow- duration in the tube have been measured13; and compared with the theoretical predictions. The experimental were conducted for various reservoir pressures and tube Mach numbers. The pressure time histories were used to measure the various quantities of interest.13; The test time was found to be 33msecs (corresponding13; to a 6,3m long tube) on the average and does not vary13; significantly with pressure or with the tube Mack numbers.13; The boundary layer effect was found to be not significant13; at low tube Mach numbers. At the higher tube Mach numberst13; the boundary layer growth being faster, it reaches the13; axis before the end of the test duration. The measured13; pressure drops agree well with the theoretical predictions.
