    Abstract

    Transonic flow past ellipsoids of revolution at zero incidence has been solved assuming the flow to be steady, inviscid, isentropic and irrotational. The method adopted13; is similar to the Garabedian-Korn method for two-dimensional analysis.13; 13; The full potential flow equation is discretised following13; Murman. The boundary condition of flow being tangential to the body has been applied on the body and the resulting finite difference equations have been numerically solved. The main difference from Garabedian's two-dimensional analysis is the additional terms due to the axisymmetric nature of the flow and the starting solution which, in the present case, has exponential dependence on the radial coordinate whereas it has algebraic dependence in the two dimensional case.13; 13; Flow is computed on ellipsoids of minor axis/major axis13; ratios of 0.28 and 0.333 and free-stream Mach number 0.85, 0.9, 0.925, 0.93, 0.95 and 0.975. The comparison is made with the calculations of Langley and Jameson, where available, and the results are in good agreement.
