Abstract
Results are presented of a fairly comprebensive experimental study of tbe effects of geometry and Reynolds13; number on model Savonius type rotors. Tbe influence on tbe13; aerodynamic performance of the number of blades, gap widtb13; and blade curvature have been determined. Tests were done13; at Reynolds numbers between 1 x 105 and 2 x 105. The efficiency of the rotors generally increases wi tb Reynolds13; number in the range considered. While the starting torque13; is slightly higher and the IU1gular regions of negative13; torque are less or absent it is found that the 3 bladed13; rotors have upto :55% lower peak efficiency thaa 2 bladed13; rotors. The op.rating tip speed ratios are also generally13; lower. It must therefore be concluded that unless improved13; starting performance is the main criterion 3 bladed rotors13; are less efficient than 2 bladed rotors.
