    Abstract

    The asymptotic (long time) solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation,. consisting of a single soliton passing through a vanishingly sma1l dispersive wave train, is considered. Explicit asymptotic results for the dispersive wave train and its interaction with the soliton are obtained by use of Fourier analysis. It is found that the effect of the interaction on the dispersive wave train is a variable phase shift. Numerical results which agree with the theoretical predictions are reported.
