Abstract
Stability analysis of the Third order upwind difference13; schemes for the one-dimensional convection diffusion., equation is made using von Neumann stability analysis. Euler explicit scheme is used for time marching. The degree of upwinding/downwinding is controlled through a parameter-q. The effect of this parameter on stability is-studied so that the largest time step At or the diffusion numbered can be selected for a given cell Reynolds number Rc For very low Rc downwinding (qlt;O) improves stability whereas for larger R c upwinding (qgt;O) is better. For the latter case the critical diffusion number dcrit decreases like 2/Rc This is faster than the value 1/R for the first order upwind scheme.
