Abstract

A numerical simulation of the laminar flow of an incompressible fluid in a driven radial polar cavity is presented. The computation uses a pressure-based finite volume method for solution of Navier Stokes equations in boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinates. The flow solution algorithm RANS2D has been developed at the CTFD Division, NAL during the last ten years for time accurate calculation of general two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow in complex configuration. Numerical computation has been carried out using different grid resolution and different convectiveflux discretisation schemes at two different flowReynolds number based on the uniform tangential velocity of the driven inner wall of the polar cavity. The grid-independent computation results for circumferential and radial velocity distribution and the computed particle traces are validated against LDA measurement of velocity field and flow visualization studies on driven polar cavity, reported in unclassified literature.
