Abstract
This report presents the Handling Qualities (HQ) assessment results obtained from an analysis of the flight test data of Fighter Trainer Aircraft, MiG 21 Type 69b U-2153. The flight tests were conducted by ASTE, Bangalore, and the HQ analysis of the flight test data was done at13; FMC Division, NAL. The flight test data was generated at two flight conditions (0.65 M, 3 km and 0.85 M, 3 km) using both open loop control inputs such as step, doublet, multi step (3-2-1-1), sine sweep excitations, and performing closed loop control tasks such as formation flying, target tracking. LOES, CAP', Pitch Rate Response, C*, Gibson's Dropback, Bandwidth,Closed Loop and Smith-Geddes criteria were used to assess the HQ of the aircraft. The analysis predicted the Fighter Trainer, at the two flight conditions tested, to be free from PID13; tendencies, to possess Level I HQ for general pitch maneuvers and large amplitude control tasks, and to have abrupt, bobble tendencies (HQ Level 2) during small amplitude closed loop pitch attitude control tasks such as air-to-air refuelling.
