Abstract
The decomposition behaviour of Kevlar49 fibres at temperatures / 500xB0; C has been analyzed. Isothermal ageing at both 500 and 550 xB0; C causes decomposition, the controlling factor being the duration of the cumulative exposure, viz., t (T). Decomposition is preceded by progressive diminution in crystallinity as well as weight loss. Decomposition is also accompanied by the introduction of surface damages and partial hollowness in individual filaments. The crystal structural characteristics also manifest slight changes.
