Abstract

Fluorescent penetrant inspection showed linear defect indication in one of the HPTR blades of an aeroengine. The subject blade was sent to the laboratory for analysis. Visual and stereo-binocular observations showed shiny dent marks at three locations on the firtree of the blade. Scanning electron microscopic examination revealed that one of these dents was associated with a shallow crack. Fractographic features showed that the crack was caused by static overload in a localized region. Evidences suggest that the dent marks resulted due to tool gripping at the firtree region.
